Chapter Eleven
Bear
“His name was Nick,” I began, stumbling a bit on his name. My hands shook as I prepared to explain to Cole how I’d smothered the man who, at one time, meant the world to me. Not literally but sitting here tonight, waiting to see if Cole would show up, gave me time to see Nick wasn’t completely wrong in his accusations as he shoved the last of his belongings into a suitcase and left. “I can’t help the way I am. When I’m with someone, I would do anything to keep them from hurting, physically or otherwise. Nick was a sweet guy, but he was a doormat. He had so-called friends who knew he’d never say no, and they took advantage of his big heart. When I pointed this out to him, he was angry and upset, but he stopped hanging out with them as much. And he was happier, or so I thought.”
“He was faking it,” Cole interrupted. I shrugged. “That’s not on you, Bear.”
“Why did you want to know my name if you’re still going to call me Bear?” Non-sensical, I know, but it seemed strange to me.
“I told you, you don’t look like a Jared to me.” He rolled to the side and ran a hand down my chest. “Bear suits you much better. But back to your story. You don’t get to change the subject.”
He swatted me, and my hand shot out, fingers wrapping around his wrist. His eyes widened, and he licked his lips. Why in the hell did everything with him have to turn sexual?
Because you want him, you idiot. That’s a good thing. It was great to feel alive again after so long convincing myself I was better off being alone, but it was also scary as hell. “Anyway, that was just the start of it. He’d over-extended himself between classes and work, and I was making good money at the club where I worked. It was totally different from Club 83, and we had an arrangement where I made a percentage of the door. It could barely be considered work when I spent every night feeling up gorgeous men and listening to some of the best new bands in the area.
“This went on the entire school year. By the time finals came around, he was like a walking zombie. He barely passed his classes and freaked out a bit. That’s when I started laying down the law.” Of all the times I’d revisited and rehashed our relationship, tonight was the first time I had no desire to go back in time and do things differently. I’d never know if Nick and I would’ve lasted, but I had Cole here with me now and what I felt for him was so much more than we’d shared. “I started imposing a bedtime, which he balked at originally, but later admitted helped him. We sat down every week to figure out what he had going on so he wouldn’t miss any appointments. I told him I didn’t want him working once fall came and he started classes again.
